During my first five years teaching, I felt as if I spent my days battling the kids, trying to convince them to do what I knew they needed to do in order to be successful in my class.

I'd bought into the ideas espoused by many administrators and veteran teachers:

  • Don't smile before Christmas
  • Never let them see you sweat
  • Make sure you have zero tolerance for classroom disruption
  • Adhere to the classroom rules no matter what
  • Focus on your content

I was burning out, and even worse, most of the kids hated my class. Truth be told, so did I.

I was thinking about getting out of the classroom -- until I finally turned the corner and figured out how to partner with my students.
